Development ideas perso

Post by Patrick BIANI »

I'm ready for the future development of CloudCompare
involved in the development of the module export points
Topos compatible AutoCAD and SketchUp
My next suggestion would function development
follows:
Management Module-configurable size points to allow
display a graphical 'rude' first visual analysis between two clouds
-Module of recognition of simple shapes: circles, rectangles,
Perimeter Plans as entities exportables in DXF polylines
-Module of recognition of complex shapes: pipes and elbows, cylinders
Module-ballad video bedchamber of the model and along a path, exportable. Avi

no shortage of ideas .... good luck to the developers

I am currently doing a phd thesis at EDF R&D (France), working on the topics you mentioned in your post, especially the recognition of shapes in a 3D point cloud. My work is in progress but I have implemented a few interactive tools that enable shapes fitting in a 3 dimensional point cloud : cylinders, cones, tori, planes, spheroids. These tools can not yet be found in the "trunk" branch of CloudCompare because of the fact that it is not really reliable at the moment. But we aim to provide these functions some day in the trunk version ...
Concerning the automated detection of shapes, it is not a simple task and it is still an active research topic. Nowadays, this task is often implemented though the use of interactive tools so that the user can drive this detection, and thus provide reliable results (whereas fully automated algorithms are not quite reliable). In my thesis, I try to perform an automated recognition of industrial elements (pipies, elbows, ...) using some available 3D model that is similar to the point cloud to be processed (up to some differences).
Anyway, all these works are really time consuming but they may appear in CloudCompare some day, like i said before (not so soon actually ^_^).
