Re-Align object orientation

Post by Marvin_Martian »

When using 3D scanners they scan at which the orientation of the object is, is it possible to get the object re-oriented at a 0,0,0 in X,Y,Z in cloud compare, this is helpful when reverse engineering, mirroring in CAD programs etc and would this tool be the level tool ?

The issue I have with the level tool is, I understand you have to choose a center point, then an X axis followed by the Y with the X axis typically aligned with the center point. I have problems with getting it aligned based on the world axis that included the bounding box to be perfectly aligned so that I can bring into a CAD program, for example. And have it aligned for tools such as symmetry etc.

I have attached a screen shot to show.
This is the object when first loaded into Cloud compare, it's orientation is not aligned.

This is a crude attempt at getting it to align.

Hum, indeed, the 'Level' tool is not meant to perform such precise alignment (it's mostly aimed at creating a rough coordinate system, focusing on making the 3 points horizontal).

Maybe you would get better results with the 'Align' tool (point pair picking) if you are able to pick 3 or 4 known points in the cloud accurately.

Doesn't align, align two point clouds ?

How would I use to to make the mesh aligned and oriented ?

You can use it on a single entity with known points (for which you input the coordinates manually).

You might also want to check the point cloud scale and coordinate precision before processing. I’ve seen some strange alignment and rendering behavior in CloudCompare when the coordinates are very large or come from mixed sources. Recentering the cloud or using global shift sometimes fixes it surprisingly well.
